Joint communique on the results of the Meeting of Defense Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member States

A meeting of Defense Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member States was held in Dushanbe on July 28 under the chairmanship of Tajikistan.

The Ministers exchanged views on topical issues of international and regional security in a traditionally friendly and constructive atmosphere, and noted the high level of mutual understanding between the Member States of the Organization.

In their opinion, the SCO is celebrating its 20th anniversary as a significant international organization capable of effectively influencing the maintenance of peace and strengthening security.

The Ministers intend to continue cooperation to strengthen security and maintain stability in the Organization’s space in the conditions of increasing conflict potential in the world, the pandemic of a new coronavirus infection and the continuing high level of the terrorist threat.

The heads of the defense departments noted the cooperation of the SCO member states in the fight against the CAVID – 19 pandemic, in countering challenges and threats, as well as the exchange of information in the field of security.

They condemned attempts to falsify the historical truth about the causes and results of the Second World War, as well as the rehabilitation and glorification of Nazi criminals and their accomplices.

The parties are confident that the development of joint actions of the armed forces of the SCO member states during the military anti-terrorist command and staff exercises “Peace Mission-2021” will help to increase the level of coherence of military command bodies and military formations when conducting combat operations with armed formations of international terrorist organizations.

The heads of the defense departments agreed to continue ensuring the comprehensive assistance of all SCO member states to the accession of India and Pakistan to the SCO international documents in the military field.

Issues of strengthening peace, stability and security were touched upon, and concern was expressed about the rapid deterioration of the situation in Afghanistan. The participants noted the need to prevent the destabilization of the situation in the SCO space and a significant increase in the activity of terrorist organizations in the region after the withdrawal of NATO and other countries ‘ military contingents from Afghanistan.

In order to strengthen friendship and good-neighborliness, maintain peace, security and stability in the region, the Ministers called for increasing the practical interaction of the SCO with regional partner organizations.

The Cooperation Plan of the Defense Ministries of the SCO member states for 2022-2023 was approved.

The heads of the defense departments stressed the special relevance of holding the festival of military orchestras “Fanfares of Peace” in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, scheduled for October 18-23, 2021, this year, declared the SCO Year of Culture.

In order to ensure regional stability and create favorable conditions for reliable sustainable development of the SCO, the Ministers agreed to further expand cooperation.

It was decided to hold a regular meeting of the Defense Ministers of the SCO member states in 2022 in Uzbekistan.
