The SCO Secretariat hosted a round table on “Constitutional Reform in New Uzbekistan”

On August 5, 2022, a round table was held at the SCO Secretariat on the topic “Constitutional Reform in New Uzbekistan”, organized by the Embassy of Uzbekistan in China, the National Center for Human Rights of Uzbekistan, the Development Strategy Center of Uzbekistan and the SCO Secretariat, the organization’s website reports.

The meeting was attended by the leadership of the SCO Secretariat, senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, heads and representatives of the diplomatic missions of the member states, observers and SCO dialogue partners, experts from leading political science centers of China, etc.

SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming sent a video message in which he praised the ongoing reforms in the country aimed at building a New Uzbekistan and improving the well-being of its people. The constitutional reform of Uzbekistan is aimed at implementing the priority principle: “In the name of the honor and dignity of man”.

“Human dignity is the provision of a peaceful and safe life, fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, the gradual creation of decent living conditions and modern infrastructure, qualified medical care, quality education, social protection and a healthy ecological environment for every inhabitant of the country,” he stressed.

First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, Director of the National Center of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights, Chairman of the Constitutional Commission Akmal Saidov spoke to the audience online, emphasizing that constitutional reforms are designed to serve the implementation of the tasks of further sustainable development of Uzbekistan, increasing the well-being of the population and prosperity of the country, strengthening her prestige in the world. The President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who initiated the constitutional reform, noted: “This will be the will of our people – a real people’s Constitution, the only source and author of the Constitution will be the people. Each of our compatriots will be able to proudly say: the new Constitution of Uzbekistan is our Constitution”.

Director of the Center for Development Strategy of Uzbekistan E. Tulyakov, director of the Institute for Social Development of Europe and Asia under the State Council of China Li Yongquan, leading expert of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Su Chan and others also made presentations.
