The Institute of Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (Beijing), in partnership with the Far Eastern Federal University (Vladivostok), held an international scientific conference on “Security and Economic cooperation between China and Russia in Northeast Asia” on May 26.

International experts representing leading analytical centers and research universities in China and Russia took part in the event in an online format. The Director of the Institute of Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, KAON, Sun Zhuangzhi and the Deputy Vice-Rector for International Relations of FEFU E. E. Vlasov delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.

The discussion focused on the problems of external challenges and internal difficulties of cooperation in Northeast Asia, international coordination of efforts in this area, and the need to solve economic problems in the post-epidemic era.

The participants of the conference were unanimous in their opinion that instability and changes in the world provide an opportunity for further development of cooperation between the six states of East and North-East Asia (China, Russia, Mongolia, the DPRK, the Republic of Korea and Japan). In their opinion, relations between China and Russia have withstood the tests of the pandemic. The two countries are committed to protecting regional security and stability, increasing the level of cooperation, and promoting development and prosperity in the region.

The implementation of such major projects as Yamal LNG has laid a solid foundation for cooperation between the two countries in Northeast Asia. At the same time, they have many points of contact in various fields, excellent conditions and great potential for stimulating cooperation in the field of trade and investment promotion, as well as cooperation within the framework of the “New Northern Policy” of the Republic of Korea, the creation of an economic corridor between the Russian Federation, China and Mongolia, etc., – the participants of the conference noted.
