Russia-China: Strategic Partnership Diplomacy in a new era

Date of publication: 26 March 2021

Sergey Sanakoev, President of the Center for Asia-Pacific Studies, Deputy Chairman of the Russian-Chinese Friendship Society, member of the Russian International Affairs Council, published an article in the People’s Daily on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation between China and Russia.

In it, he noted that Beijing and Moscow do not need to form blocs against any country in the world, they have a self-sufficient agenda of two great powers, good neighbors, building a joint equal and mutually beneficial strategy.

For the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China, the inviolability of the results of the Second World War, the recognition of the conscientious Great Victory in it as the heritage of all mankind and the need to create a community of one destiny are equally important.

The parties also link the integration processes of the construction of the EAEU and the Belt and Road initiative. At the same time, they are open to any country wishing to join this process.

Russia was the first country to send a delegation of experts on epidemic prevention to China, and China was the first country to provide effective anti-epidemic assistance to Russia.

States have joined forces to counter the epidemic and jointly fight against the “political virus”. However, the West shamelessly called the sincere desire of countries to help all those in need to provide vaccines the use of “vaccine diplomacy”.

The States should also focus on the economic agenda of bilateral relations in order to make the most of the potential for developing mutual cooperation and overcoming the global crisis. From January to February of this year, the volume of bilateral trade between China and Russia reached $18.78 billion, which is 8.5% more than in the same period last year.

Agricultural products, cross-border e-commerce and trade in services are growing contrary to the general trend.

“We intend to jointly build grandiose infrastructure facilities. And for the implementation of joint projects, we will create new mechanisms of cooperation,”, Sanakoev concluded.
